FHE

As Mormons we have been counseled to hold FHE and teach our children the things that they need to know to return home to Father.  I have always loved FHE – single or not – and now I get to experience the joy of it even more.  I  am sure for most families that FHE sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t.  ELder Bednar gave a conference talk on consistency and effort in the small things when raising a family (FHE, family prayer and scriptures).  Our little family does well at holding it but sometimes Rob and I wonder if anything is soaking in.  Since today was Labor day the boys had all day to “prepare” for FHE.  (Katie had “an awesome” time on a play date at the Turpins.)  So the boys put together a “skit” of Joseph’s life (the coat of many colors Joseph).  My mom implemented a talent portion in FHE with Mandy and Nathan and now we do the same, for example Elizabeth demonstrated rolling over last week. :)  This week was Samuel and our “skit”.

Then we had a lesson taught by Elizabeth (aka Mom) about coveting (with Dad’s input).  We started by talking about trapping ourselves with dishonesty/ingratitude, etc. a object lesson done with string and Samuel being tied to it and then released through repentance.  Next we moved onto three separate packages – a big one, medium and small.  We rolled dice to see who chose first and Katie chose the largest one.  Then Caleb the medium and Samuel got to chose between all of them (Caleb did as well) – they traded around until everyone had a different one than they started with (kinda like a White Elephant exchange game).  Anyway, then they opened them – the largest, Sammy, had coal, the medium, Katie, got three pieces of chocolate, and Caleb the smallest $1.  Then we talked about what coveting is, why it is wrong, etc.  We had a fun time and the kids all commented on the lesson – sometimes it works!

Tonight while cooking dinner I looked up and saw this.  P1013331 I love that they all love books and that they will read to their siblings.

Sounds like a hoot. Will have to use the coal, chocolate, dollar idea in my Primary class. You rock.
